Key Takeaways

What Is a Weekly Timesheet?

But first, definitions. A weekly timesheet is a way for you and your employees or contractors to track the hours worked. There are daily timesheets, weekly timesheets, monthly timesheets and even project timesheets. It all depends on the way your business operates.

Why should you use online timesheets?

  • Tracking your worked hours online makes it easier to bill your customers accurately.
  • You can manage your expenses better by tracking employee hours
  • As an entrepreneurial exercise, it can be interesting to track your work hours for a month. You will learn a lot about effective time management
  • Itemize time spent for business expenses and overtime hours

1. FreshBooks

We have to add in a shameless plug every now and again.

But we wouldn’t create anything we weren’t proud of!

Our time tracking software is incredibly intuitive. It integrates seamlessly with the rest of your account for you to send customer invoices for your worked hours. You can set your hourly rate and our system will automatically calculate your pay.

The software includes a timer that you can begin whenever you start a task. This works automatically in the background. It doesn’t interfere with your work in any way and can be paused at any time.

Our timer works across platforms within the FreshBooks app. Track your work in real time from the mobile app or using the Chrome extension.

You can also integrate our timer with your favorite productivity apps. Trello, Asana, Basecamp and Teamwork all sync to our timer directly.

As much as we love our time tracking manager, here are two other great options depending on what you need!

2. Clockify

Clockify is a freemium online timesheet software. It is a web application that allows you to track your billable hours. With a very professional interface, Clockify allows you to track your timesheet for free.

It is built around teams. So this is ideal as a modern employee time sheet with automated reports. Clockify simplifies the entire payroll process by calculating wages.

The free features are quite powerful. You can have unlimited users, unlimited tracking and unlimited detailed reports.

The upgraded versions allow you to bulk edit and customize your reports. The $5 plan also allows you to access invoicing tools.

It’s not the most intuitive interface, but it’s easy to see why Clockify is so popular!

3. Toggl Track

Toggl is another wonderful time tracker. It has a fun, clean interface that is easy to navigate.

With the free plan, you can have up to five active members of your team. That said, Toggl is more aimed at the solopreneur than teams. It is marketed as a tool to track your own time as a professional and work smarter during your day. That is why it has an in-built pomodoro timer that helps you manage your work day. Very handy feature!

That’s not to say you can’t use this as a time tracking tool to ultimately invoice customers. You absolutely can! The one-click tracking works across platforms and operating systems – iOS, Android, web app, browser extension etc.

You can set up an automatic timer on certain applications as well. For example, an auto-timer can let you know your time spent on slack.

Overall, this is a good option for freelancers and solopreneurs who want to master their time management skills.

Honorable Mention: Microsoft Excel

A more manual method of time tracking suits some people best. Microsoft Excel and its free alternatives like Google Sheets still pack a punch. You can manually enter your “clock in” and “clock out” times on a simple timesheet template. Of course the downside is the time tracking is less accurate than with the other programs on this list.

Key Takeaways

Time tracking is essential for any entrepreneur who works hourly. You can more accurately bill your clients and manage your time. It is invaluable if you have hourly employees too.
